CAMILLA D’ERRICO
Camilla D’Errico is a talented visual artist who has been making a variety of artworks since 2001. Heavily influenced by anime, one of her favorite forms of entertainment, and a great love for comic books, she soon gained huge recognition in that area and began to branch out into other forms of art, from comic books and graphic novels to paintings and even designer toys! Many of her works are featured on commercial products like snowboards, handbags, clothing, journals, stationary, and even Gelaskins for phones and computers. I got a chance to chat with Camilla and was able to gain insight into her art and personality.
Interview by Veronica Lamaak
What has been your favorite art showing or event in 2009?
The Three Apples Hello Kitty 25th Anniversary events. I am a huge Hello Kitty fan, and even if I hadn’t been asked to participate in the exhibition, it would still be the answer to this question. But I did participate, I did a full color painting, plus Sanrio flew me down
for the “Meet the Artists” party where I live painted another piece that got auctioned for charity. It was a crazy night, and I’m so happy for the organizers, Sanrio and JapanLa, because they’ve created something that spoke to so many people, and satisfied a lot of Hello Kitty appetites!
I absolutely adore your art, especially the Helmetgirls with octopuses. Where do you get your ideas? Do you just happen to love octopuses?
Actually, I do love octopuses. I think they are fascinating! They are extremely intelligent and street smart (in the animal kingdom). I always use the animals in my paintings with some symbolism; the octopus is not only smart, but wise and watchful. I grew up in nature, and I love and respect all animals. I’ve got a particular fondness for the undersea world, with its dark depths and mysteries too.
