PINCH ft. YOLANDA – GET UP REMIXES (Tectonic)
Jan. 28th, 2010 by Ric Baker
Pinch continues his support of dubstep and vocals with the Get Up Remixes (Tectonics) featuring the work of L.V., RSD, Jack Sparrow, and Guido. Pinch’s original mix embraces a 2-stepish, soulful vibe with great funky percussion and a nice melodic sensibility. Initially, the vocals distract from the overall bassiness of the track, but in the end they sit nicely over an extremely well produced beat. While the lyrics and subject matter don’t exactly take any chances, they lend the track soul. Dub accents throughout the track give the song dimension and depth.
As the label manager and owner of Tectonic, Pinch has done a superb job of assembling some top remixing talent that lends this release a great amount of variety. The version by RSD is a driving, intelligent, atmospheric production that uses call and answer keyboard parts to underscore the vocal and really enhance the musicality of the track. L.V. interpreted “Get Up” from a reggae steppers’ perspective with a deep dub bass line, an organ skank, and very cool dubbed out saxes. This is the highlight of the EP as L.V.’s dub sensibility and excellent production present the vocal in its most favorable light. Jack Sparrow has laced his remix with subtle wobbles and a very dark beat, while Guido has given “Get Up” a more minimal treatment, with some questionable harmony.
The Get Up EP is a successful attempt at vocal dubstep, although it doesn’t live up to Pinch’s masterful 2007 release, Underwater Dancehall. The remixes are masterful and give the vocal interesting and different contexts to explore.
